You Don't Have to Settle for "I'm Okay"
Living with fatigue or discomfort is not normal. Women deserve to feel empowered to reclaim their health and for their concerns to be validated! At our practice, we often hear from women that that their symptoms are dismissed or that they struggle to find the support they need. The healthcare system is unfortunately overwhelmed and is unable to give women the time and care they require, and many healthcare providers are not well-equipped to manage women's health beyond acute cases or pregnancies.
The hormonal changes that come with puberty and menopause can be difficult to navigate, especially if they bring along symptoms that impact your energy, mood, sleep, and overall quality of life. Naturopathic Medicine can especially be very valuable to women experiencing hormonal issues. It offers holistic and individualized strategies that support your body through every stage, helping to balance hormones, ease symptoms, and prevent health complications. You deserve to be heard and feel supported at every stage!
Key Hormones Impacting Women's Health
Estrogen: This is the primary sex hormone responsible for the development of female reproductive and secondary sexual characteristics. It also plays an important role in regulating cholesterol, bone density, and mood, hence why the drop in estrogen levels during menopause exposes women to a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and depression in addition to symptoms like hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and low libido. There are different forms of estrogen, with estradiol (E2) being the primary type during reproductive years, estrone (E1) being the highest during menopause, and estriol (E3) increasing during pregnancy.
Progesterone: The primary role of progesterone is to prepare the uterus for implantation if pregnancy occurs by thickening the uterine wall, or the endometrium. This is why normal levels of progesterone is critical for fertility and maintaining a healthy pregnancy. Low levels of progesterone can also cause an irregular menstrual cycle and mood changes as well as lead to an increase in estrogen levels, which causes symptoms like weight gain and low libido.
Testosterone: Yes, women have testosterone too, but at much lower levels than men! Testosterone in women is responsible for maintaining their muscle mass, bone density, and libido. Higher levels of testosterone in women can cause many problems including an irregular menstrual cycle, facial and body hair growth, acne, a deeper voice, and male-pattern balding. Women with a condition known as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) often have higher levels of testosterone, which can manifest some of these symptoms.
FSH: The follicle-stimulating hormone is a very important signalling hormone that is produced by the pituitary gland in the brain. In females, it stimulates the ovaries to grow follicles and produce eggs, which is why measuring your FSH levels is key in assessing your fertility status. When a woman enters menopause, FSH levels become very high because of a reduction in estrogen release by the ovaries. These high FSH levels are typically used, along side a missed period for 12 months, to diagnose menopause.
LH: The luteinizing hormone is another very important signalling hormone that is produced by the pituitary gland in the brain. In females, it triggers ovulation, which is why measuring your LH levels is also key in assessing your fertility status.
TSH: The thyroid stimulating hormone is the chief signalling hormone that controls how much thyroid hormones are produced by your thyroid gland. Thyroid hormones, including T3 and T4, are crucial for maintaining metabolism in the body. Both low and high levels of thyroid hormones can lead to many health issues and pregnancy complications.
AMH: The Anti-müllerian hormone, which is produced by the ovaries, helps in fetal development and plays a role in fertility. In females, AMH levels are used to estimate ovarian egg reserve and predict response to fertility treatments like IVF.
Prolactin: This hormone is primarily responsible for stimulating breast development and milk production in females after childbirth. High prolactin levels, known as hyperprolactinemia, can lead to symptoms such as an irregular menstrual cycle, infertility, breast milk production outside of pregnancy, and decreased libido.
Insulin: Your pancreas produces insulin to help regulate your blood sugar and allow cells to take in glucose for energy production. Known for its role in diabetes, insulin resistance is also highly linked to polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). In fact, treating insulin resistance using diet, exercise, diabetes medications, or glucose-lowering naturopathic therapies is very effective at managing PCOS symptoms and improving fertility.
Female Conditions We Treat
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS): The most common hormonal condition among females of reproductive age, characterized by the presence of at least two of three criteria: 1. Irregular or absent menstrual cycle 2. Biochemical or clinical signs of excess androgen hormones such as facial or body hair growth, acne, and hair thinning 3. Presence of multiple cysts on the ovaries. PCOS is strongly linked to insulin resistance, which Naturopathic Doctors are experts at managing, helping females with PCOS resolve many of their symptoms and significantly improve their quality of life.
Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS): A set of psychological and physical symptoms that occur a week or two before the menstrual cycle, including mood swings, irritability, brain fog, insomnia, bloating, pelvic pain, breast tenderness, and headaches. For many women, PMS can be so severe that it negatively affects their day to day living. Luckily, there are many treatment options available that can help women ease their PMS symptoms such as heat pads, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, birth control medications, antidepressant medications, herbal medicines, and certain supplements. Our doctors can help you choose the right treatment option for you and manage your PMS holistically.
Dysmenorrhea: Menstrual cramps caused by the shedding of your uterine lining during your period. It usually starts a day before your period and lasts for two or three days. There are a number of treatment options to manage primary dysmenorrhea including heat pads, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, birth control medications, herbal medicines, and certain supplements.
Perimenopause: The menstrual stage leading up to menopause, which typically begins for most women in their mid 40s. During perimenopause, estrogen levels start to gradually decline, leading to irregular menstrual cycles and symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, mood swings, headaches, low libido, and sleep problems. Naturopathic Doctors are especially trained to manage symptoms of perimenopause and menopause and can bridge the gap in healthcare by offering tremendous value to females during that stage of their life using holistic care strategies and bio-identical hormone replacement therapy.
Menopause: Females transition into menopause when their period has stopped for 12 consecutive months, marking the end of their reproductive years. Menopause typically occurs for most women in their early to mid 50s. Because of the sharp decline in estrogen levels at that stage, women can start experiencing uncomfortable symptoms including hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, mood swings, headaches, low libido, urinary urgency, weight gain, and sleep problems. Additionally, lower estrogen levels after menopause exposes women to a greater risk for high cholesterol, osteoporosis, and depression. Naturopathic Doctors are especially trained to manage symptoms of perimenopause and menopause and can bridge the gap in healthcare by offering tremendous value to females during that stage of their life using holistic care strategies and bio-identical hormone replacement therapy.
Hair loss: Caused by many underlying factors, Naturopathic Doctors apply the principles of comprehensive testing and holistic care to help women experiencing hair loss get the results they are looking for.
Hyperemesis Gravidarum: Pregnancy is a precious and sacred gift from life! However, many women can experience debilitating symptoms throughout their pregnancy, making the experience really challenging. Nausea and vomiting during the first trimester can especially be very difficult to live with. Our team provides supportive treatment options, including IV therapy and acupuncture, to help relieve these symptoms and make pregnancy a more comfortable experience.
